In this discussion, we will review various principles and tools for working effectively with your child’s educational institution. We will focus on the use of Gender support plans as a foundational document for establishing a positive school experience for gender young people.

About the Presenter

Joel Baum, MS  For more than 35 years, Joel Baum has worked to create more just and equitable conditions for historically un/underserved communities. He began his career as an award-winning educator, school reform coach, and educational leadership professor, before moving on to his recent work as Senior Director for Professional Development with Gender Spectrum. There, he facilitated trainings, conducted workshops, developed curriculum, consulted with parents/ professionals, and provided resources in service of a more compassionate understanding of gender and young people. He was a founding member and Director of Education and Advocacy with the Child and Adolescent Gender Center at UCSF-Benioff Children’s Hospital. Working throughout the United States and beyond, he continues to be called upon to help institutions think more expansively about the gender diversity of all children and teens, and ways to create more inclusive conditions accordingly.  Equity continues to be at the heart of his work in his current role as Director of Learning Design at Safe Passages. Serving families and communities in Oakland, California, Safe Passages provides wraparound services to disrupt cycles of poverty endemic to the city’s inhabitants young and old. Joel oversees the organization’s professional learning and development as well as provides strategic support across the organization’s various initiatives. Whether working to support English Language Learners and immigrants, focusing on racial disparities in schools, or bringing broadened understandings of gender to professionals in all fields, his professional life has been focused on helping historically oppressed individuals and communities to be seen, safe, supported and successful.
